Dental & Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that emerge, usually during your late teens to early twenties.  Some people have enough room for these teeth to erupt and grow in naturally.  However, others do not have enough space and this in turn leads to impaction.

When there is a lack of space in your upper or lower jaw, eruption will be prevented by overlying bone, gum tissue or an adjacent tooth.  This will cause the tooth to become partially or completely impacted.  When a wisdom tooth is impacted, this can cause pain and lead to infection.  Impacted wisdom teeth can also damage the adjacent molar, leading to loss of that tooth.  If the follicle surrounding the impacted tooth becomes filled with fluid and enlarges to form a cyst, then more serious problems may occur.

For those people who do have enough room for their wisdom teeth to erupt, it is still important to have an evaluation to determine if extraction is recommended.  These may be just as prone to disease as impacted wisdom teeth.  Not all problems related to wisdom teeth are painful or visible.

It is estimated that greater than 85% of wisdom teeth will eventually need to be removed.  This is why a focused consultation with Dr. Alderman, who specializes in the removal of wisdom teeth, is crucial and of great benefit to your oral health.  We encourage you to contact us with any questions you may have.
